AT RISK YOUTH - OPORATION WE CARE'S ANSWERS THE QUESTION WHAT DO WE DO NOW?

Photobucket

As you can see from the video posted above we are definitely living in very turbulent times. There have been many solutions people have tried to use to combat these problems the one listed below most have embraced but what are the results and If so then why are the kids rebelling more than ever?

At Risk Teen Boot Camps

If you have been searching for help for an at-risk and defiant youth, you have come to the right place. We specialize in military-style boot camps for kids who are acting out and performing poorly in school. A Teen Boot Camp is similar to life in the military. The youth are up early - usually around 5 or 6 a.m. – and they have chores, inspections, march in formation, calisthenics, kitchen duties, laundry detail, etc. It is no fun, but quite effective at turning around a rebellious child. The camps are ongoing, so a youth can begin any time. Academics are with drill instructors in the classroom and minimum grades are mandatory. We work with youth as young as 10 years of age and can take a child until 6 months of his or her 18th birthday. If your child is in need of therapy of intense counseling, this is not the program for you. If you child needs structure and discipline, this is the place for them.

What is an at risk youth program?

In today's society there is plenty of talk about teen boot camps and structured programs for defiant teens. As you have probably realized, many sites on the Internet propose that they have military-structured programs when, in actuality, they don't. Several of the schools that advertise military-type schools offer nothing more than boarding schools or specialty programs. The difference between a true at-risk teen boot camp and a boarding school is the way the program is run. A true at-risk teen military-type training camp will include uniforms, marching in formation, "yes, sir", "no, sir" tactics, early engagement in calisthenics, and a day filled with a very structured schedule. The at-risk teen military school will also be an in-your-face-style program with drill sergeants, bunk beds, barracks, etc.

Do all schools advertising really have boot camps?

Various programs advertise that they have at-risk teen boot camps, when in reality what they have is a boarding school. The programs do this because they are trying to fill a niche. An adult growing up during the 1960s and 1970s may remember their out-of-control peers being sent to military-type schools. This option was quite popular during that era. Today, sending your teen to a military-type school is different than the 1960s or 1970s, because they must be willing to attend. “Boot camps for teens” is a popular search term because of what the military and boot camps have done for many adults. There are many stories about boys who have joined the military and been forced to grow up while in that environment. This life-changing experience has literally taken many boys and turned them into men. If the military today was anything like the military of the 1960s and 1970s, this might be a good alternative. Although, as we discuss on our “what works, what doesn't” page, we explain how this option is inappropriate for defiant, out-of-control, or at-risk teens.

DOES THIS WORK FOR EVERYONE?

After care full research and monitoring we have realized that "EVERYTHING ISN'T FOR EVERYONE IN THIS CASE" We noticed that you can't fight a fire with a fire and we would rather teach them to "LOVE THEMSELVES 1ST" because as we all know that it's never a good thing to go against anyone who is on the defensive offensively. What we need is more programs that focus on "LOVE", SUPPORT & RESPECT that is what "OPORATION WE CARE" is focusing on. So if you want realistic results we must provide realistic solutions to these problems and Love 1st then some nurturing then education.

We hope we can count on your help to help us to achieve these endeavors.

SpiralFrog the free and legal, ad-supported web-based music service, announced that it was selected by the non-profit, Keep a Child Alive, to be the exclusive download partner for “Alicia in Africa: Journey to the Motherland,” today. The documentary highlights, Miss. Keys month-long trip to Africa to visit communities affected by HIV and AIDS.

The first preview of the film aired live on American Idol’s Idol Gives Back.

“Everyone who visits Africa is changed by the experience, but not everyone can afford to go to Africa, come with me on my journey and learn as I learn. Let’s start a virus to stop a virus- send the film to everyone you know. Let’s change this nightmare into our generation’s greatest success story.

Spreading the message is so important to Alicia that she is making the documentary available for FREE online. She is also bringing the experience to her concert goers. She’ll be screening the Alicia in Africa trailer before each concert on her As I Am tour, that kicked off April 19 in Virginia. Alicia will also announce the “Text Alive” initiative, which allows anyone to make an immediate $5 donation to KCA simply by text messaging “Alive” to 90999

By attempting to reach the broadest audience as possible , hopefully resulting in donations and a greater understanding of the situation in Africa.

At Operation We Care our mission is to educate to general public about the plight of the homeless and disenfranchised youth. Our program offers aid to these individuals by working with shelters and other organizations to give them a place to have a shower and hot meal, assist in connecting them with organizations that can help with resume writing and career development and business attire for interviews. Operation We Care will feature the stories of these individuals, giving them a vehicle to tell their story and hopefully create change in our communities.

Our program will document our interaction with the homeless so that our financial supporters can see how we are using the funds to aid the youth and homeless. Operation We Care recognizes that not all homeless people have made the choice to be homeless. There are many situations where people have lost theirs jobs or other experienced catastrophic events such as Katrina and as a result of that, lost everything else in their lives.

Operation We Care wants to bring light to these stories not only for the purpose of education but also to change the widespread misconceptions that surround the homeless. We only seem to hear of the drug addicts and runaways, but they too are caught in a cycle and need our help. Our program will offer a start towards rebuilding their lives and becoming valued contributors to the economy and community.

KEITH ROBINSON/FOUNDER & PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Our community programs are failing our disadvantaged youth and this has resulted in this causes them to get caught up in criminal and premature sexual activity. There are many young people that are left to fend for themselves because of parents that are on drugs. Many are dealing with lack of nutrition, basic needs and parental nuturing. We've heard of tragedies such as the 3 months old girl who died in a house fire when her parents left her alone. These stories are not isolated. They are becoming more common everyday and Operation We Care is committed to doing our part to help as many people as possible.

WE CARE.....DO YOU?

DO YOU THINK YOU REALLY KNOW THE MEANNG OF A HOMELESS PERSON? THINK AGAIN!

Many people still think of homeless transients as alcoholics and/or mentally disabled. The truth is, the current homeless population consists of runaway adolescents, single adult males or females, battered women and over one million homeless families with children typically headed by a female parent.

HOMELESS IS: To be homeless means that one's primary residence is a public or private shelter, emergency housing, hotel, motel, living with family or friends or any public space like parks, automobiles, aqueducts or abandoned buildings

HOMELESS DEFINITION BROKEN DOWN: (A) means individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence (within the meaning of section 103(a)(1)); and (B) includes—
children and youths who are sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason; are living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative adequate accommodations; are living in emergency or transitional shelters; are abandoned in hospitals; or are awaiting foster care placement;
(ii) children and youths who have a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings (within the meaning of section 103(a)(2)(C));
(iii) children and youths who are living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings; and
(iv) migratory children (as such term is defined in section 1309 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965) who qualify as homeless for the purposes of this subtitle because the children are living in circumstances described in clauses through (iii).

This story is so sad. Unfortunately, a suicide/murder pact is not the answer to this family's problems which ended in tragedy. This was a beautiful family.

Watching his family's new, two-story home being built in 2001, Ervin Antonio Lupoe appeared to be riding a wave of hope and excitement. He dropped by each week to check the progress, one construction worker recalled.

But in what authorities believe was a gruesome burst of anger after he and his wife lost… Continue

Counting and iPods

Are you homeless and use one of the many colored apple ipods?

More and more in the last two years I've been seeing public uses of technology by more people experiencing homelessness than 'homies' or business people when walking the streets of Jacksonville.

My take: either they're more savvy than 'homies' and local business people...OR...there's more of them that aren't being admitted to after the last 'Homeless Count'.

The thing about the count that gets me is nobody admits just how 'off' it really is. While local 'counters' and volunteers did appear to attempt to find and engage more in the past, they still aren't bellying up to the realities.

In my opinion Jacksonville has at this moment approxiametely 18,732 people experiencing homelessness. Give or take 5, depending if you use the McKinney-Vento Act standards or HUD definition rules.

Don't ask how I know the numbers, that's classified...just as much as what's really going on that they don't want you to know.

...you figure out who 'they' are.

Accomodations: Who gets it first, kids?

It's another gimme, you run a shelter you need lighting fixtures!

About four years ago I knew this one guy that worked in a shelter, handling more things than he needed due to outdated equipment provided. While wonderful office accommodations were built for the senior staff, the fact is some of the residents were living in what was no better than a garage.

A big garage. One you could drive a semi in, park it, and have room for maybe four more.

Me, I'm against that. I'm all for having people 'satellite' off laptops accommodating the needs of those they serve, rather than their needs accommodated eight hours out of the day.

Going green differently

Years ago I used to enjoy talking about my dumpster diving antics, pretty much a 'green' thing when you can find spare computer parts. As time went by I was able to afford laptop memory to enhance products purchased for my advocacy.

I was talking to a guy this week in Cleveland who's doing the 'green' thing in his community. They're literally reusing old things in building a greenhouse project, but it's not your typical thing. Full business, plan, and they sell the produce to the local neighbors at reduced cost.

Very nice.

What stuff's made of

Ok, so readers outside of being homeless have use and need for an instant life insurance quote, but the fact is those experiencing homelessness 'might' not have like interests.

Same goes for luggage. They're demands are more realistic. Homies really don't check the product as much as homeless. I've yet to see luggage on wheels that can take two weeks of streat-beat I've personally put some through.

Before born

One of the projects I've been involved with since December 2004 has been the Medical Home for Homeless Children's Project. Through it, many expecting mothers received prenatal vitamins that otherwise wouldn't have.

While Jacksonville is touted as providing some of the best of care, many people fall through the cracks 'trying' to get through the nightmare of weeks until just the first financial appointment.

There's then the weeks of attempting to get confirmation they're not working as well as paperwork from case managers where they stay...'if' they stay somewhere.

I talked to Tamara Patton from the Jacksonville Homeless Speakers' Bureau yesterday. Seems she's hearing the same thing from others trying to do just that at the moment...get help when proactively trying.

Yes, there 'are' services. But no, they're 'not' able to provide such to everyone as believed. The common thing I see constantly are armchair quarterbacks ranting online in local forums.

It's a good glimpse into someone's character.

No wonder they like using cute monickers rather than their own name in public.

Demand Question Time

My boss Katrina vanden Heuvel recently detailed the merits of a new campaign that could enhance civic engagement, make politicians more accountable and promote the notion that our elected reps should be able to talk lucidly about the issues of the day.

The idea of "Demand Question Time" came in the wake of the unprecedented live, televised question-and-answer session on January 29 between President Obama and the House Republican leadership. Since then, people of all political persuasions have been endorsing the value of what's being called "Question Time" -- from the editor of 'The Nation' to the leader of the Cincinnati Tea Party!

Use the form below to add your name to the call for the President and Congress to implement a regular schedule of public Question Time sessions.

Last Flight to Abu Dhabi

Billy Bragg, a living legend of the British punk and folk music scenes, just released a new song as catchy and relevant as anything he's produced in many years. Debuted two nights ago at a Haiti benefit concert in London, 'Last Flight to Abu Dhabi' takes to task "the bankers who caused the crash."

The opening verse:
"Johnny was a banker, he made a lot of cash
Betting on derivatives, he helped to cause the crash
Now that everybody wants to limit his income
Jonty's packed his bags and he's going on the run"

And, as I said, the tune is real catchy.

Protests in Iran

A week after the contested June 2009 presidential election, the image of blood covering the face of 27-year-old Neda Agha-Soltan dead in a street in Tehran became the symbol of the Iranian people's struggle for freedom. What seemed at first an isolated demonstration against a rigged election, eventually turned into the largest uprising against the Islamic Republic since its inception in 1979.

Free Speech for People

My colleague and friend John Nichols' new post appropriately lauds Rep. Donna Edwards' proposed legislation to redress the damage done by the Supreme Court in its decision in the case of Citizens United v. FEC to abandon long-standing precedent with the purpose of permitting corporations to dominate the political discourse.

As 'The Nation' editorialized recently: "The clearest and boldest counter to the Court's ruling is a constitutional amendment stating unequivocally that corporations are not people and do not have the right to buy elections."

The first article of Edwards' proposed bill says it all: "The sovereign right of the people to govern being essential to a free democracy, Congress and the States may regulate the expenditure of funds for political speech by any corporation, limited liability company, or other corporate entity."

Goodbye Howard Zinn

Howard Zinn, the Boston University historian and political activist who was an early opponent of US involvement in Vietnam and the author of the seminal 'A People's History of the United States', died today at the age of 87 of a heart attack in Santa Monica, California. He was in a swimming pool doing laps and was spotted immediately by lifeguards but died instantly.

Zinn's brand of history put common citizens at the center of the story and inspired generations of young activists and academics to remember that change is possible. As he wrote in his autobiography, 'You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train' (1994), "From the start, my teaching was infused with my own history. I would try to be fair to other points of view, but I wanted more than ‘objectivity'; I wanted students to leave my classes not just better informed, but more prepared to relinquish the safety of silence, more prepared to speak up, to act against injustice wherever they saw it. This, of course, was a recipe for trouble."

Watch these videos to get a sense of what we've lost.

Air America's Fall

In the wake of Air America's sad demise, the rightwing blogs are predictably crowing. See the aptly-named HotAir, which argues that the network's failure demonstrated the lack of interest in liberal talk radio or the Newsbusters blog which contends that the network was redundant because of the blatant leftwing bias of National Public Radio.

I have a different take, informed in part by actually working with Air America in various ways. I think the network was a mess in important respects, that it unnecessarily burned through money, and that management blunders were among the chief reasons for its bankruptcy. ('The Nation''s Nicholas von Hoffman published a tough report on the then-fledging network in 2005, which I think hit many correct points.) Essentially, I agree with Bill Press writing at the Huffington Post: "In the future, business majors will study Air America as the textbook case of a great idea, but lousy execution."

So I do think there's an immense market for smart, funny (ideally at the same time) progressive radio. The huge audience for Amy Goodman's Democracy Now!, the standard-bearer of left radio, is just the most obvious demonstration of the medium's popularity.

The most powerful earthquake ever recorded in the country struck Haiti yesterday, causing catastrophic destruction in the hemisphere's poorest nation. The quake struck near the capital of Port-au-Prince, the most densely populated part of Haiti, and thousands are feared dead. Most telephone communications throughout the country have also been destroyed complicating relief work.

The most urgent needs appear to be bandages, antibiotics, other basic medical supplies, and water tablets to prevent cholera outbreaks. The need for food and shelter is also growing especially given that these needs are severe in impoverished Haiti in the best of times.

There are numerous ways to help groups already on the ground. One of the best, Partners In Health, has been operating in the country since 1987, originally to deliver health care to the residents of Haiti's mountainous Central Plateau region. PiH now also operates clinics in Port au Prince and other major Haitian cities. With hospitals and a highly trained medical staff in place, the group is already mobilizing resources and preparing plans to bring medical assistance and supplies to areas that have been hardest hit.

Terror in Uganda

I generally try to devote this space to reporting on ways to combat outrages being perpetuated in the US and/or 'by' the US overseas. As an American, I feel a personal responsibility to oppose the misdeeds of my own country first and foremost. There's also enough going on in my own backyard, and with my own tax dollars, that I typically have sufficient material without calling out foreign despots.

However, what's going down in Uganda currently compells me to comment. Uganda is a country where homosexuality is 'already' illegal, where violent attacks are common and where rape is used to 'cure' people of their sexual orientation. Now, a shocking new law has been proposed that would make homosexuality punishable by life imprisonment or even death.

As my colleague Richard Kim reported last December, "'The "Anti-Homosexuality Bill' was introduced by Ugandan legislator David Bahati, a member of The Family, the fundamentalist Christian group whose devotees include Congressmen Bart Stupak and Joe Pitts, Senator John Ensign and South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford. According to an NPR interview with Jeff Sharlet, whose 2008 book documents The Family's influence in US politics, Bahati organizes Uganda's National Prayer Breakfast and runs something called the African Youth Leadership Forum, an alumni group associated with Youth Corps, part of The Family's Cornerstone leadership academy."

Diapers 101

Did you know that diapers are not covered by public assistance programs like WIC or food stamps? And did you know that diaper companies do not make significant donations to shelters or outreach programs, as infant formula manufacturers do? That makes diapers one of the scarcest resources for poor families.

I didn't know any of this until I read the admirable helpamotherout.org site.

If you're not a parent, you might be surprised that a jumbo pack of Pampers costs from $10 to $15--that's 20 to 30 cents each, depending on the size of the diaper. And if you can't shop at discount big boxes like Target or Costco and instead have to rely on bodegas and chain drugstores, the prices are even higher. Given that even healthy newborns go through roughly 60 or more diapers a week, these critical conveniences become a major household expense.
